Highlights

You may be familiar with some whisky facts — like how taxes once pushed distillers to operate exclusively at night, or how the Scots refer to it as the "water of life." But on this four-day whisky journey through Islay, the "Queen of the Hebrides," you'll uncover so much more.

Relish the smoky flavours of Islay's single malts, explore its iconic landmarks, and connect with other whisky lovers at six distinct distilleries.

  • Travel through Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park and the "Gateway to the Isles" at Oban, then board the evening ferry across to the Isle of Islay — the Queen of the Hebrides
  • Enjoy a tour and tasting at Bowmore Distillery — over 240 years of Islay heritage — and an exclusive tasting and lunch at Kilchoman, the island's only single farm single malt distillery
  • Immerse yourself in an exclusive tour and tasting at Ardbeg Distillery with a meal of Scottish cuisine overlooking the Atlantic, and visit the ancient Kildalton Church and its rare 8th-century cross
  • Tour and taste at Laphroaig — the wild spirit of Islay in every bottle — or Lagavulin on Monday departures, plus a visit to Bunnahabhain from April 2026 departures onwards
  • Return via Inveraray, the dramatic 'Rest and Be Thankful' viewpoint, and the picturesque lochside village of Luss on Loch Lomond before heading back to Edinburgh

4-Day Islay, Oban & the Whisky Coast Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Loch Lomond & Oban

Leaving Edinburgh, we head towards Islay, renowned for its peaty whisky, where tradition, nature, and craftsmanship come together to create world-famous spirits. As we travel northwest, the landscape changes from the gentle Lowland farms to the rolling hills and peaks surrounding Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. This stunning area, teeming with wildlife and dramatic vistas, is marked by rugged cliffs, shimmering lochs, dense forests, and the legendary tales of folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor. A quick stop in the charming village of Callander offers a pleasant break before we continue.

We meander through the hidden glens and winding paths of Trossachs National Park, then press onward through the breathtaking mountains of the Western Highlands, reaching Oban for free time for lunch. Once the stronghold of rival clans, Oban is now known as the "Gateway to the Isles" and is celebrated for its fresh seafood, direct from the boats.

Next, we travel through Kilmartin Glen, a site rich with ancient stone circles and forts dating back over 1,500 years. At Kennacraig, we board the evening ferry to Islay. The two-hour crossing offers a chance to unwind — keep an eye out for dolphins or the towering Paps of Jura. Once we arrive, we settle into Bowmore, a peaceful town on Loch Indaal, where we'll stay for the next three nights.

  2. Day 2

    Bowmore, Bunnahabhain & Kilchoman Distillery

Today is all about savouring some of Islay's finest and most distinctive whiskies. We kick off at Bowmore Distillery, an Islay icon with over 240 years of history. Uncover Bowmore's rich heritage, explore its whisky-making process, and enjoy a tasting of three drams of their signature sweet, smoky whisky, along with a complimentary whisky glass.

From there, we follow the coastline to Kilchoman Distillery. Kilchoman is Islay's only Single Farm Single Malt Scotch Whisky, made using the traditional "barley-to-bottle" method, creating a spirit entirely produced on the island. During this exclusive visit, tour the distillery and sample Kilchoman's unique whisky, which blends peat smoke, citrus, spice, and fruit. After free time for lunch, we journey through Islay's picturesque countryside to Bunnahabhain, the island's most secluded distillery, renowned for its unpeated whisky with salty undertones. Please note: Bunnahabhain Distillery visits are only included for departures from April 2026 onwards.

We return to Bowmore, where you can unwind by the loch, visit cosy pubs, enjoy fresh seafood, or stroll through the quaint, history-filled streets.

  3. Day 3

Ardbeg & Laphroaig or Lagavulin Distillery

Today, we journey across the southern part of the island, where three of Scotland's most renowned whiskies await: Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg. Our path meanders along winding roads, flanked by lush green hills, fields dotted with sheep, and vast moorlands. Near Port Ellen, we pass through stretches of peat bogs, which play a key role in Islay's distinctive smoky character.

At Ardbeg Distillery, a tradition of bold innovation spans 200 years. Immerse yourself in a special experience: a guided tour, tasting three exceptional drams, and enjoying a meal of exquisite Scottish cuisine in the distillery's restaurant, offering stunning views of the rugged coastline and the Atlantic's crashing waves. Please note: on Friday departures a full distillery tour is not included — instead you'll visit the still house and enjoy a tasting of four drams.

Your driver-guide will also lead you to Kildalton Church, home to an 8th-century cross — one of Scotland's finest early Christian treasures. The tour then continues to another distillery depending on the day: Lagavulin on Mondays (known for its rich depth and smoky essence) or Laphroaig on Wednesdays and Fridays (which has captured the wild spirit of Islay for over two centuries).

  4. Day 4

    Inveraray & Return to Edinburgh

This morning, we make our way to Port Ellen to catch the ferry back to the mainland, leaving behind the whisky-scented air of Islay for the crisp, clean air of Scotland's West Highlands. As the ferry departs, take in the sweeping vistas of the island's untamed coastline, iconic distilleries, and the striking Paps of Jura on the horizon. Keep an eye out for wildlife — dolphins, seals, and on rare occasions, minke whales or basking sharks.

Continuing along the coastal route, we reach the charming village of Inveraray, where you'll have free time to enjoy lunch. Next, we head east through the dramatic Arrochar Alps, stopping briefly at the famous 'Rest and Be Thankful' viewpoint, before continuing toward Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Here, we make a short visit to the delightful village of Luss, renowned for its picturesque cottages and stunning lochside views.

As we journey on, the rugged Highlands gradually give way to the softer lowland plains, and we make our way back to Edinburgh.

What's Included

Accommodation
  • 3 nights en-suite accommodation with breakfast
  • What should I expect from a B&B?
B&Bs are traditionally small family owned and run properties offering a handful of guest rooms. They are usually residential properties, so they tend to be located on the outskirts of towns and you should be prepared for a 20–30 minute walk to local facilities like pubs and restaurants.
It's unusual for a B&B to offer any additional services like concierge, porterage, evening meals or room-service. Wi-fi is usually, but not always available and it's worth bearing in mind that access can be unreliable in more remote locations.
If you have difficulty with stairs, please request a ground-floor room (subject to availability, upon request only) as lifts will not be available in this type of property.
